PENNINGTON COUNTY DEMS TO SELECT DELEGATES TO STATE CONVENTION

RAPID CITY - -  The Pennington County Democratic Party will select delegates for the state party convention and hear a presentation by PUC candidate John Zaiko at a meeting Thursday, May 27. The South Dakota Democratic Party Convention is set for June 24-26 in Sioux Falls.

County Chairman Jeff Nelsen said the local committee will elect nine delegates to attend the state convention, where participants will choose a running mate for gubernatorial candidate Scott Heidepriem, nominate a slate of candidates for statewide constitutional offices, and vote on a platform of issues from alternative energy to open government.

Zaiko, of Pierre, is seeking the party's nod for a seat on the Public Utilities Commission. In April, the Democratic Central Committee voted to recommend a slate of candidates to the convention, including Julie Bartling for State Auditor, Ben Nesselhuf for Secretary of State, and Doyle Karpen for the PUC seat.  The recommendation, however, does not preclude additional nominations at the convention, and Zaiko has pledged to continue his campaign and make his case to convention delegates.

Meetings of the Pennington County Democratic Party are open to registered Democrats and begin at 7 p.m. at the IBEW Hall, 922 E. Saint Patrick St.

Good Morning,
The Pennington County Democrats have the opportunity for some community service.  We are cleaning up Catron Boulevard from highway 16a to highway 79 Saturday morning at 9.30.  It will be a nice walk, we can start at the top of the hill and work towards 5th street.  If we get enough volunteers, 2 crews can work, one starting at 79 and one at 16A.  We need about 1/2 dozen additional adult volunteers, we currently have 4 committed.  8 - 12 would make light work for all.  If it is raining we can wait until the afternoon.

Please RSVP to my email or cell.

[PenDems (195)] Upcoming Pre convention Caucus

Fellow Democrats:
At McGovern Days this month there will be a pre-convention caucus to vote on recommendations for our constitutional candidates.  We cannot legally nominate for these positions until our state convention in June, but this will give us a chance to meet these folks and get them going before June.  This will also be an excellent chance to participate for those not able to attend the state convention in Sioux Falls.

The county auditor has received 2 nominating petitions for delegates to the State Convention.  Our constitution directs that the remaining delegates be selected by the county eboard.  It is our desire to select those folks who want to attend and be part of the process.

Please reply to the county chair or any of the eboard if you are interested in attending the pre convention caucus at McGovern Days and / or the State Convention in June.

Thank you for commitment to our party,

Subject: Re: Media list

I'll check in with folks who said they would help. I think the main thing we need to do is get the ads for the program sold by April 2. Here is the flyer and a sign-up sheet for volunteers for other activities at the reception and SDDP events. Would you please pass around at the meeting tonight?  I'll follow up with everyone tomorrow. I'm on a drop dead deadline, client clamoring, and will probably be pulling all nighter, so won't be at meeting.

Thanks,
Suzanne

[PenDems (188)] Reminder

Good evening / morning:
Thursday evening, 7 pm, 922-1/2 E. St. Patrick, South door of the IBEW hall.  Monthly pendem meeting.
We need;
Delegates for the pre-convention at McGovern Days
Delegates for the State Convention in June, either a slate with one petition or single petitions for everyone.
We are completely out of time.  Bring any and all candidate suggestions and your cell phones.  We will recruit from the meeting.

I have inserted an email from Erin here which should answer you questions about delegates.
Please attend and bring ideas.
Thanks, Jeff

Hi Everyone,
Here's some info to clarify the Pre-Convention Delegates and Convention Delegate selection - without going into the nitty gritty.

DELEGATE INFO
Pre-Convention Caucus Delegates need to be elected through a public meeting before April 5
Convention Delegates need to be elected on the June Ballot
1. What if we have already had our County Meeting?
- You can send out an email to your county Dems asking them if they are interested in being a Delegate. The County Eboard can choose from those interested parties or have it be first come, first serve

2. What if we don't fill all our spots at our meeting?
- Same answer as No. 1
3. What do we do if our County Meeting is coming up?
- Notify your County Dems that you will be electing Pre-convention Delegates at the upcoming meeting. At the meeting, ask those interested to raise their hands or sign in. If there are more candidates than spots, then have the county party vote on the candidates.

4. Do County Chairs have to take out a petition for the Convention?
- No
5. How many petitions can a Registered Democrat sign?
- As many as the spots that are available - for most counties, that would be 3 petitions.
6. What do we do if no one takes out a petition?
- The County EBoard can appoint the remaining slots.
6. What are the delegates doing at each event?
- At the Pre-Convention Caucus, they are giving the backing of the SDDP to the Constitutional Candidates (AG, SOS, Auditor, Treasurer, School and Public Lands, PUC)

- At the Convention, they are confirming the Constitutional Candidates, choosing the Lt. Governor and creating the SDDP Platform.

**Please call with any other questions!
We're also sending out the attached press release today and an email to our big list will go out tomorrow.

[PenDems (187)] Action Alert: Help To Save South Dakota Public Broadcasting

For your urgent consideration I am forwarding the following message.
Jeff Nelsen, chair
Pennington County Democratic Party

Please help us to preserve public broadcasting in South Dakota!  Write to your legislators – ALL of them – NOW!!

Vicky Wicks, frequent contributor to SD Public Radio, writes:

Dear Friends: My sister sent me this, and since I have a deep and abiding connection with SDPB, I thought I'd forward it and ask you to do likewise, if you're so inclined. Even before working for SDPB, I listened to public radio and watched public TV, and as a crime victims' assistant and then print journalist, I relied on online recordings of legislative hearings so I could hear for myself who testified and what witnesses and legislators had to say.

The legislature tried to cut half a million dollars from SDPB a few years ago, and the public outcry was strong and loud. Please consider contacting legislators and letting them know how you feel about this. Thanks--Vicky

From SDPB:

Save South Dakota Public Broadcasting

Friends,

We understand times are tough, but it is in tough times that citizens of South Dakota take stock of all that is important in their lives. Even during the past year of economic crisis, THOUSANDS of South Dakotans continued to support programming on SDPB. And with the list of valuable services SDPB provides, it's no wonder. But in the final days of the legislative session it appears that South Dakota Public Broadcasting is under threat of a MAJOR FUNDING CUT, upwards of a half-million dollars. That equals about a 12% cut in state funding.

If you value South Dakota Public Broadcasting, NOW IS THE TIME to contact your legislator and make your sentiments known. Click here to find your legislator’s contact information.

The state of South Dakota provides funding for SDPB's statewide broadcast transmission system and infrastructure which is used to broadcast Television and Radio programming and web stream content online. State funds pay the electric bills, purchases and maintains broadcast equipment, pays salaries of SDPB employees and other costs. Money donated to SDPB, including money pledged during membership drives, is used to pay for programs and program-related services.

Like other state agencies, we have been cognizant of the budget issues and have been good stewards of your (and our) money. With significant cuts to our state funding SDPB’s ability to deliver programming to a statewide audience is critically hampered.

SDPB manages a vital, cost-effective communications network reaching the entire state. The network is a unique source for educational opportunities, available to all citizens. SDPB is also used for critical statewide communications – including the Emergency Alert System, Amber Alerts and Law Enforcement. No other broadcast service provides the kind of access that SDPB does to the election and legislative process, comprehensive coverage of South Dakota High School fine arts, academic and sports events, coverage of the Arts, and educational programming for young and old alike.

Think of the times you have enjoyed a program on SDPB, utilized an online resource from SDPB.org, learned something new at an SDPB outreach event... then pick up the phone or send an email to your state representatives in Pierre.

NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT!

Sincerely,

Julie Andersen
Executive Director, SDPB

Hi Jeff,

Attached is a flyer for the Rush games on January 8th and 9th. If we can get it emailed out to the Pennington County Democrat members inviting them out to the games that’d be great! All ticket orders can be placed directly with me via the contact information on the flyer. There is no minimum to buy but a group of 15 or more will get you 2 free tickets and a special gift which should be pretty easily attainable with a party of your size!

Please let me know if you have any questions and I’d be happy to help.

Thanks Jeff and have a great Christmas!

[PenDems (171)] FW: An Evening with the Artists

From the Custer Co Dems:

From David Melmer, Chairman of the Custer County Democrats

Fellow Democrat, we are living in strange times. We are witnessing political upheaval like we have never seen before. Outrageous accusations about health care, stimulus funding, and other legislation that does little but to fuel an explosion of partisanship, hatred and promotes ignorance.

We need a break. So, the Custer County Democrats offer you a brief sojourn into the world of artists minds and creativity. Three or our own, Dan O'Brien, Linda Hasslestrom and Paul Horsted will provide us an evening of entertainment, enlightenment and enjoyment all in a stable, non-threatening atmosphere. No politics will be spoken.

We want to you and your family to take a break from the day to day grind, the daily bombardment of political clap trap and enjoy yourselves. Meet the writers, talk to them, have them sign your books or buy new ones. These books will make great gifts for the holidays.

If you have friends who are Republicans, Tea Party members or political agnostics, bring them along, they are most welcome. Republicans and Tea Party members will have to check their placards outside.

Open the attachment to see the poster. Print one out and take it to work or place it in a location where others will see it.

We hope to see you on Nov. 12 at Crazy Horse Memorial Laughing Water Restaurant. There will be appetizers and a cash bar.

See you there,

David
