[PenDems (254)] State of the Union Address

Tuesday, February 25 is President Obama's 2nd State of the Union Address.  The speech will be broadcast on most TV channels starting at 9pm EST (7pm MST).  We encourage you to tune in and listen to President Obama's message.

Below is additional information about how you can participate in supporting the President  through OFA in South Dakota...

Good evening fellow Democrats,

As you know, President Obama will be giving his second State of the Union address on Tuesday, January 25.  Organizing for America is hosting a Post State of the Union Conference Call with activists from across the state immediately following the end of the address.  This will be an excellent opportunity to share ideas on how we move the Democratic Party in South Dakota forward after listening to the priorities laid out by our President.  Please send this message to anyone you feel would be interested in participating.  Whether you watch the address at home, or watch it with other Democrats, this will be a great call to jump on afterward!

You must pre-register for the call at the link listed below.  When you register, it will give you the start time in Pacific Time.  The call will start roughly at 9pm CST, and should only last 30-45 minutes.  We will set a time for another call before we end on Tuesday night.  I look forward to hearing your thoughts about the President's speech tomorrow evening.

[PenDems (251)] Democrats Respond to Daugaard Budget

TEA PARTY BUDGET IS DISASTER FOR SOUTH DAKOTA

PIERRE —   Governor Dennis Daugaard's budget is an ominous sign that
the Tea Party has infiltrated state government in Pierre, according to
Democratic State Party Chairman Ben Nesselhuf.
"The governor has apparently taken the helm of political extremism in
South Dakota," said Nesselhuf "Two months ago he refused to
acknowledge there was a budget crisis. Now he says the crisis is so
severe that we must solve it immediately by jeopardizing our
children's future and passing the buck to local governments and
taxpayers back home."
Nesselhuf said the governor's budget address was less than honest.
"He lists $30 million in cuts to health care for the poor and disabled
citizens — but those $30 million are general funds that are matched by
federal funds. The total loss will be $70 million. That's a huge blow
to South Dakota and will surely slow our recovery from the recession."
The Democratic leader said South Dakotans are a moderate people who
believe in good schools and in helping children and seniors who need
health care. "The governor's budget ignores those values."
Nesselhuf is also concerned that the budget proposal will hurt
economic development efforts in South Dakota. "If this passes in the
legislature, what signal does it send to employers and young working
families in South Dakota? The message will be that state government is
run by the Tea Party, and it doesn't believe in public education and
health care. Those two areas are the most important components of our
quality of life."
"The Tea Party has obviously recruited Dennis Daugaard to their
ranks," he said. "This is disastrous to our future."

[PenDems (246)] A note from Tom Katus

The message below is being sent on behalf of Tom Katus, Pennington County Committeeman

I will be heading to Oacoma, departing @ 6:00 am Saturday and
returning immediately afterward. I have space for three folks in my
car, if anyone needs a ride.

I have been contacted by a number of county folks, including
Pennington, as well as phone calls from Ben Nesselhuff (1) and Mitch
Fargen (2), candidates for Chair and Julie Bartling(1), candidate for
Secretary.

We PennDems appear to be split about 50:50 in our leanings for Chair.
Our two former Pennington/State Party Chairs are also split. While I
am leaning toward Mitch, because I believe he has stronger grass root
organizing skills and will keep the current staff, whom I believe did
yeo(wo)men work in trying to reach out to ALL candidates, unlike some
of our Campaigns, I have told both Mitch and Ben, I will listen
closely to their responses to questions, before I make my final
decision.

I am told that Minnehaha plans to  bloc vote and is encouraging
Lincoln to do the same. Together they makeup 26.7% of the Vote,
compared to Pennington's 10.1%.

I am also told I may be the only voting delegate from Pennington
(Chair/V.Chair/ Committeeman/woman). If you can't make it to Oacoma,
please let me know your preferences for Candidates.

Warm regards, Tom Katus, State Committeeman

[PenDems (241)] 5 Days to E-Day!

Dear Democrats,

GOTV Weekend has officially started! The Polls are showing that all
the major races are in a dead heat with a large number of undecideds.
What that means is we need to make sure OUR PEOPLE GET TO THE POLLS!
The bottom line to this campaign season is who will be more motivated
to get people out to vote and we need your help. If you have any time
between now and when the polls close on Tuesday please come and help
us to get the best possible turn out. We've all been working hard for
our favorite candidates and the Party as a whole. We have the follow
through to do this!
You can sign up using this webform

http://www.google.com/url?sa=D&q=https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform%3Fformkey%3DdEc0ZmR5TEZYcWdPWWlvM0h1dVhlLXc6MQ&usg=AFQjCNFXvCHwB1bGcdqnWuTjumfzbXIK_g

Or you can call Tom at (605)716-0259. Finally you could just stop by
our Campaign Headquarters at 1315 N. Haines right by laundry world.
We have five more days to make a difference and we need to make every
one count! Tuesday we will be having a Poll Watching party at
Thirsty's in downtown Rapid starting at 6:30. I urge everyone to come
and celebrate our victories together!

Pride in our Past, Hope in our Future,

Nathaniel Mason

[PenDems (239)] Up Coming Events

Dear Democrats:

This next week is full important events that we need your help if we
are to have a successful election season. First the Fun Stuff:

Next Saturday we are having a Rally to Restore Sanity in unison with
the one hosted by the Daily Show in Washington D.C. We will meet at
Seattle's Best in the Alex Johnson at 10 am on the 30th. We will
march down to the Berlin Wall exhibit. There we will provide answers
to current candidates and ballot issues and have media coverage before
we return to Seattle's Best to watch the speakers from the D.C.
Rally. Women Evolving (WE) will be co-hosting this event.

As a warm up to this event we will be organizing a visibility "in
honor" of Glenn Beck's book signing. We will meet up on Tuesday the
26th at the Berlin Wall Memorial from noon to 1. Bring your signs and
lets share our thoughts with Beck, Fox News, and their supporters.

Finally the Business End of things. We need your help on Get Out the
Vote. For those of you that haven't heard, the Democrats are neck and
neck with the Republicans in all key races. All the polling shows
that our candidates are within the "margin of error" in all
professional polls. Do you know what that means? This victory is UP
TO US! This election has come down to who can get more people to the
polls. Do you want to waste the first legitimate chance at having a
Democrat Governor in 30 years because you didn't want to knock on
doors? Do you want to hand Congress back over to the Republicans
because you didn't feel like making a phone call? I've been reading
articles saying that the Democrats have lost their spirit and this
will be our downfall. I've seen it. I've even felt it. Well now we
need to step up and prove them all wrong all it takes is a couple
hours on election day or the weekend before to make all the difference
in the world. Please sign up on this form
https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dEc0ZmR5TEZYcWdPWWlvM0h1dVhlLXc6MQ
If you can't make it a full shift that's fine. If there's another
area you'd rather work in call us and let us know so we can coordinate
it. Anything we do at this point will help so let us know so we can
plan to work with you.
Thank you all for what you've done, but now is the time we show our
true metal

[PenDems (238)] GOTV

Dear Friends,

Election Day 2010 is just next week, and we need your help now for
Stephanie, Scott, Ben, Tom and all of our Democratic candidates on the
ballot this year.

We are going to be waging an aggressive Get Out the Vote campaign that
will turn out our Democratic voters and the Independents who are
voting D this year. It can work, and we will win, but only with your
help now! We can prepare for life under Governor Dennis Daugaard,
Congresswoman Kristi Noem, Secretary of State Jason Gant, and State
Treasurer Rich Sattgast now, or we can fight back against the lies and
the smears and stand up for South Dakota!

Our five-day Get Out the Vote Program will turnout tens of thousands
of voters statewide but only with your help. Friday the 29th through
Election Day, we will be sending canvassers our of the Coordinated
Office at 1315 Haines Ave in North Rapid. We will also have phone
banks at the Coordinated office, as well as at the Rapid City Labor
Temple at 922 St. Patrick Street each evening. We are so close to our
goal, but still need more phone bankers and door-to-door canvassers in
every shift. Please use this web form to sign up, and your
information will be given directly to our staff.

Shifts are listed on the form. They are:
Friday through Monday: 9 am - 1 pm | 1 pm - 5 pm | 5 pm - 9 pm
Election Day Phone Bank: 9 am - 12 pm | 12 pm - 3 pm | 3 pm - 5 pm | 5
pm - 7 pm
Election Day Canvass: 9 am - 1 pm | 1 pm - 4:30 pm | 4:30 pm - 7 pm

Thank you in advance for your help. Your efforts now will ensure a
better South Dakota for years to come.

Democratically yours,

Tom

[PenDems (237)] Thursday's Meeting

Dear Democrats;

Tomorrow is our last meeting before Election Day. We need to pick up
steam if we're going to make a difference in the turning political
tide! I hope you can all join us at the Labor Temple at 7 pm.

The biggest item on the Agenda is the PennDem GOTV efforts. We have a
plan sketched out, but we need your ideas to solidify it. Furthermore
we need you to sign up to make this happen.

Also we'll be hearing from the Yes on 12 campaign, the smoking ban,
and we'll be getting feedback on our Oktoberfest.

It's an exciting time for the PennDems and I urge you all come to
share your voice.

Nate Mason
Chair

[PenDems (232)] 5 weeks to Election - Make it count!

We have 5 weeks left until the election, and its time that we ALL get to work!

Scott Heidepriem has a real chance to become the next Governor of our state, and I hope that everyone of you will make a commitment to help work towards the election on November 2.  Democrats have been working incredibly hard to contact voters in Rapid City.  If you care about this election, we need you to take some initiative and get involved.  Volunteering for the campaign can be a lot of fun, it only takes a few hours of your time each week, and it will make the difference that we need to change the leadership in Pierre for the future of our state.

Volunteer opportunities with the Pennington County Democrats for the week of September 27 to October 4.  Everything happens  Coordinated Campaign office at 1315 Haines Ave. next to Laundry World.

Tuesday, September 28 & Thursday, Sept 30 - 5:30 to 9pm - Calling Democrats for Scott Heidepriem and other Dem candidates
Stop by the office whenever you have time and make phone calls to voters or knock on doors in Rapid City.  Come when you want and stay as long as you can.

Saturday, October 2 - Noon to 3pm - Door-to-door Canvass
We'll provide lunch and a short training to make sure everyone's ready for the day.  Teams of volunteers will go door to door to talk to fellow democrats about our candidates like Scott Heidepriem, Ben Nesselhuf, and our other state and local candidates.

Remember:  Yard signs and barn signs for all the candidates as well as information about the candidates is available at the campaign office anytime!

For more information, contact 660-626-6634 or email democrats@pendems.org.

[PenDems (229)] Door-to-Door Canvass - Volunteers needed!

The first door to door canvass focussed specifically on Scott Heidepriem and our local candidates will be held this coming Saturday, September 25, beginning at noon.  Meet at the campaign office at 1315 Haines Ave, between Batteries Plus and Laundry World where the Obama campaign offices were in 2008.

Lunch will be provided, a short training on message will follow, and you'll be given walk lists that will take about 2 hours to finish.  It's time more West River voters heard about Scott Heidepriem, Ben Arndt and their campaign's message!

We'll be talking to Democrats who don't vote regularly, Independents who don't vote regularly, and newly registered Dems and Independents – people who will hopefully be receptive to our message.

So bring your smiles and your enthusiasm!  It'll be a gorgeous day, and after the rain that's coming, you'll want to be out and about.

[PenDems (227)] Early Voting Starts Sept 21

On Tuesday, September 21st, the coordinated campaign will be having several early vote events across South Dakota.  The goal of these events is to bring attention to early voting and to the fact that we are very organized this year.

Our Early Vote rally in Rapid City is scheduled for 12:00 PM this Tuesday.  We'll be meeting at Seattle's Best Coffee, talking about early vote and it's importance to the campaign, and marching over to the courthouse to cast our votes.  This is strategic to the campaign because it shows that we are more organized than the Republicans, and it locks in supportive votes for us now that we don't have to worry about turning out on Election Day.  We also want to show South Dakota that early voting is fun and simple.

Anyone who wants to attend should call me at 716-0259 to RSVP or email me at tnardi@sddp.org.  Don't forget to bring your photo ID to early vote.

Thanks!
