Pennington County Democrats On the Move

The Pennington County Democrats had an awsome potluck and meeting at the Labor Temple on Thursday evening. Dems from Lawrence County, Meade County, and Fall River County were also in attendance. We are very optimistic about 2008, especially with this level of interest already. People are recognizing we need to start on the 2008 election now.

Excitement was in the air as we heard from Rick Hauffe, executive director of the South Dakota Democratic Party, and SDDP Legislative Director Matthew D. McLarty. Jane Murphy, newly appointed organizer for the Democratic Party's 50-state strategy here in West River was introduced.

Rick encouraged us to embrace a new neighbor-to-neighbor grassroots organizing strategy, and some new information management tools the Democratic Party is rolling out nationally that will help us at all levels, from the precinct to national efforts.

Rick had some great things to say and the folks and we had about 10 signups to do neighbor to neighbor house parties on Nov. 3.

County Chair Cheryl Chapman (and former Lt. Governor candidate and activist Eric Abrahamson) both encouraged everyone to sign up for the 2011 program... $11 per month (signup with ActBlue). If two percent of registered Dems in South Dakota gave $11 per month, we'd have $600K per year. This would cover the state Dem party's base expenses and allow us to have some working money all the time (and avoid expensive debt!). This would give us the freedom to spend all of the big ticket event proceeds directly to candidates campaigns. Cheryl explained that the more money our local members give, the State party shares back a larger percentage directly to the county.

The idea of the 2011 program ($11 for 2011) is that if we have this funding base together we have a good chance of being strong next time legislative redistricting happens in South Dakota -- if Democrats have more power in the state in 2011, our long-term ability to work for our values successfully is assured!

Saturday was fantastic too

Rick Hauffe was kind enough to send along these pictures from Oktoberfest.

Cheryl Chapman gets the mike.

State Sen Tom Katus was also on hand. He's on his way already for his 2008 run to stay in Pierre. Go Tom!

This was a great event too. Our friend Denise has the skinny and pictures over at the Hog House. Thanks Denise!

Countdown to Change Party at Matt's House for Obama!

The Presidential primaries are a happenin' thing... PenDems for Obama are invited to get active by Matt McGovern:
Countdown to Change Party at Matt's House for Obama's Iowa Campaign

Obama volunteers nationwide are hosting house parties on Saturday, September 15, in support of the Obama campaign's efforts in the early primary states. I will be hosting one at my place, at 7pm, with food and drinks. This will be a lot of fun and really helpful to the campaign.

We will be sending postcards to voters in Iowa asking them to support Obama in the caucus, which is important because its the first in the race.

The campaign sent out this email a couple weeks ago urging people to attend these parties:

"In mid-September 2003, national polls showed Joe Lieberman to be the front runner for the Democratic presidential nomination. Then John Kerry won the Iowa caucus and the New Hampshire primary, and the shift in momentum carried him to a decisive victory.

The lesson: early polls don't mean a thing and success in crucial early-state contests will win the Democratic nomination.

With the first votes in the 2008 Presidential campaign now less than 150 days away, we're entering a decisive time in our movement.

To build momentum for Barack in the early states, supporters nationwide are hosting Countdown for Change house parties on Saturday, September 15th.

Together, we are counting down the days until the early primaries and caucuses -- in Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, and South Carolina -- and now is the time to leverage our national movement to make the maximum impact in the early states.

Attend a house party and you will:

Take part in an exclusive conference call with our top staff in the four early states.

Reach out and make direct contact with voters and organizers in the early states.

Meet fellow Obama supporters in your community and build networks that are vital to our success.

Never before in American history has the presidential nominating contest been as compressed or early as it is now.

We can only win in these essential contests if our strongest
supporters combine their efforts across the country.

This phase of the campaign is when early organization must transform into on-the-ground action. You can be a leader in this action by signing up to attend a house party today."

I hope you all can make it, this will be a lot of fun.

Time: Saturday, September 15 at 7:00 PM
Duration: 2 hours
Host: Matt McGovern
Contact Phone: 605-430-5182
Location:
Matt McGovern's place (Rapid City, SD)
875 E. Minnesota St. #A
