2. PenDems Meeting Report
The PenDems had a very successful meeting on Thursday, Nov 16.  Almost sixty committed Democrats were there, and the course was set for the next few months. Sarge Preston was elected State Committeeman from a field of five motivated and energized candidates. Candidates for State Party Chair were discussed, and the good news from around the County and around the State was celebrated. For more information see:

3. Democracy Now!
Paul Jensen of the PenDems suggested we check out this website.  Traditional news organizations, although many do great reporting, sometimes have their content and delivery modified to get higher ratings, or better serve the needs of corporate stockholders. Even news from public broadcasting isn't always unbiased--for example, the entire board of directors of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which is a major funder of public broadcasting, must be approved by Congress? Check out Democracy Now! -- it is totally funded by listeners and viewers.

There have been many recent articles about former Sen. George McGovern, you can search for them on the site. Here's a great interview from Nov 21:

PenDems Meet!

The Pennington County Democratic Party meets on Nov. 16. This is more than a Party. It's a movement.

What a great meeting on Thursday night. To start it off, when folks showed up they brought food to donate to the KOTA Care and Share Food Drive, filling up the back of a pickup truck for those in need. And, there were 55 people there. The energy in the room was so positive... we are thinking about 2008 already, but we are also thinking about 2006. Eric Abrahamson has urged us to leave this election energized to serve our community with renewed commitment outside of party politics, to continue to put our ideals into action in everything we do. We have many opportunities for public service, and Dems should be in there sharing our values, doing what we always do, so people know what what our values are long before there's an election going on.

As we turn the page from this exciting campaign season, we see new ideas and new leadership that honors and builds on the sacrifices and efforts of the past. The mood is very positive. (Having both of our most senior representatives to Washington now in the majority party is helping the mood too, of course!)

After careful consideration and voting among a field of five excellent candidates, Robert "Sarge" Preston was elected to fill Haven Stuck's seat as State Committeeman until April and will represent us, along with the rest of the Executive Board, at the State Party meeting on December 9 in Chamberlain. At that meeting no fewer than four very strong candidates will be running for SD Dem Party chair.

Linda Lea Viken, a long time observer and former State Legislator, explained to the group that after the election the balance in Pierre is far improved over last year. In 2007, moderate Democrats and Republicans will have much more representation on committees, and in the State Senate, Republicans will need the Dems help to pass any specific appropriations--as these require a 2/3 "super-majority," and the Repubs can't do it alone any more. The group discussed how having Tom Katus at the table in Pierre, and at the West River cracker barrels, will help us bring our values forward. Our hard work in 2006 has created change, and there WILL be dialogue this year!

Eric Abrahamson, Lois Facer and Ritchie Nordstrom reported that they have been up in Meade County helping Mary Beth Anderson, the new Party Chair up there, get organized, so now we have a more active Dem organization up there.

We heard about other activity that bodes well for our future: Justin Lena our chair, committed himself to continue to serve our Party after his term ends in April. Jocie Baker is working on a pilot voter identification project using information we developed during the election which we can use as a template for similar efforts throughout the County. Lesley Kandaras, Cheryl Chapman and others are development a strategy document based on the results of our highly successful post-election information-sharing session last Saturday. The room was bubbling with many people with lots of ideas, but with a lot of focus and commitment to improving life in West River and South Dakota to better align with the values that our Party represents.

PenDems meet Thurs--bring non-perishable food items!

Just a reminder of the PenDem meeting Thursday night, 6pm, Billion office, 629 Main St.

Main topics: what's up with the SD Dem Party, an election to fill Haven Stuck's committeeman position (see previous emails for details on that) and details on the PenDem elections coming up in the spring (two-year terms expiring).

The KOTA Care&Share food drive just started. A few of us have decided (with Justin's okay) to facilitate a contribution from the PenDems... just as a community service, not as a political statement.. so when you come the meeting bring some non-perishable food items. Maybe the Repubs will match our effort in a friendly competition?

One more thing, there are still many dishes, furniture and other items lent to the Billion office that have yet to be picked up. Come on by and get them, or when you come to the meeting plan on picking them up at that time. Thanks.

We received this note from Eric Abrahamson today:
Jack Billion and I are working on a thank you event here in Rapid City for the PennDems and friends. We had thought we could pull this off by tomorrow night, but we've decided to postpone so we all have a chance to catch our breath. We'll be in touch with everyone about this shindig. In the meantime, I'm hoping everyone has their feet up for a little while. I know we're all fired up for the future.

Our Victory

From: Justin Lena, Chair, Pennington County Democratic Party

My fellow Pennington County Democrats,

We won.

The results are clear.

Across the nation, in South Dakota, and here in Pennington county, Democrats made political gains that few people could have predicted a year ago.

The United States House of Representatives and Senate are in the hands of our Party. And contrary to Republican rhetoric, Democrats have a long and proud history of governing our nation well. There is much to be straightened out on the national scene, and our party is willing and able to do it. Our state did our part in this effort by re-electing the very competent and popular Congresswoman Herseth. She is well deserving our support and sincere congratulations on her victory.

Across South Dakota, Democrats made respectable gains. Though some results have yet to be finalized, it appears that Democrats gained a total of six legislative seats. The gain of five senate seats is especially significant. The entire slate of 89 Democratic candidates unified behind the Common Ground plan, which is a pledge to voters to change the priorities in Pierre from divisive social politics to the issues that affect all South Dakotans.

Western South Dakota, which historically has been safe territory for Republicans, delivered two of those Senate seats. Our own PenDem Tom Katus from District 32, convincingly defeated the formidable Ellie Schwiesow. That victory, along side the defeat of Referred Law 6, sent a strong message to the ultra-conservatives that in no way do they speak for the "vast majority" of South Dakotans as they have repeatedly claimed.

Other races in Pennington County were very close. Paula Long Fox came within three percentage points of defeating the well funded incumbent Republican Mike Buckingham. Still other contests were lost only by a few hundred votes which demonstrates real vulnerabilities in the Republican Party. Clearly, Democrats are gaining ground.

Of course we all wish we had more to tally in the victory column. And we had some disappointments. However, Jack Billion and Eric Abrahamson ran a very positive and respectable campaign of sound issues and ideas. They worked hard, as did all of our candidates in the Black Hills. Win or lose, we can hold our heads high, knowing that we are on the upswing.

This year Democrats were successful in changing the content and tone of the political conversation. We turned the tables on the other Party and got out in front. We made the news more than read the news. There is no doubt that Democrats in Pennington County were the leaders in the political dialogue. One only has to look at the shift in the rhetoric of our opponents. For example, health care was no where in their agenda until we put it in ours. The same can be said about campaign finance reform.

We have the right ideas and the right ideals. And we are better organized than we have been in years.

But much work needs to be done to build on our progress.

We must be willing to support our new Democratic Senator Tom Katus when he goes to Pierre. We must keep our agenda in the forefront. We need to press the Republican legislators on their campaign promises.

But most of all, we need to do the hard work of improving the grassroots of our Party. In the wake of our successes across the nation, Howard Dean insisted that victories in 2008 will be won in 2007. So please, as we move forward, lend a hand to the Party in the off year of 2007. Let's do the necessary work to organize ourselves long before we get so busy in the campaign year.

The experience we gained this year will guide us for the next. I'm looking forward to working with you to bring more success to the South Dakota Democratic Party. And thank you again to all of the hard working candidates and volunteers who supported them.

Justin Lena
Pennington County Chair

Thank You

From: Judy Duhamel
Chair, South Dakota Democratic Party

Dear Candidates and Supporters,

It's hard to find the right words to both commend and thank you for the ground swell of organization and energy you devoted to this election. While we didn't elect as many candidates as we had hoped to elect, we provided a level of discussion far better than we have been able to achieve in the past. We played hard and well in this game. We take pride in the manner in which we campaigned. Candidates---you were outstanding! Thank you for dedicating yourselves to the good fight. I am proud of each of you--indeed, talking about the Black Hills Slate has been such a pleasure these past months.

To the volunteers, we are indebted. The GOTV effort was amazing in some districts. Kudos to DIA—a major influence in this election. You put your "normal" life on hold and immersed in the efforts to elect democrats. Thank you.

With Appreciation and Admiration,

Judy

ps Today is the first day of the next campaign.

What to do about your yard signs

From District 32 sign coordinator Beth Wojahn:You can take the signs down yourself, toss them, keep them, whichever you prefer. (Some people like to save them for next time if they happen to be in good enough shape.) Otherwise, we will have folks driving around town tomorrow and Friday picking up whatever we see has been left out.

Thanks for your support! We are sad that neither Suzan nor Pam are going to Pierre, but we are thrilled to see Tom going to the Senate. We believe that this is just the beginning of some great changes in our legislature, and we hope that people like you can help us keep the momentum going until next time!

Dems Kick ... whatever

The feeling of hope and anticipation of things to come is so present here tonight. Watching the national returns come in and seeing Tom ahead of Elli and Theresa Spry ahead of Napoli is just really something.

Thank you, Elizabeth Krause!

Here at the Radisson. Eric Speaks to the night!

It's a thrilling night.. just heard Stephanie's victory speech, we're all here just waiting for West River results.. this is EXCELLENT. Everything is looking good.

We're seeing a lot of East River Dems doing well... Larry Diedrich looks like he's going down, Even Six is looking good. And of course nationally it's a amazing wave for Dems.

If you are THINKING of coming down here, please do, it's a great night to be a Dem down here.

Eric Abrahamson just said:
This is a fanastic night for the Dem Party. We will have a TRUE two party system in this state, starting tonight. Tonight is the beginning and we build from here over the next two years ... etc we will take the house, we will take the Senate, we will take the Governorship. Just a few moments ago Jack called Mike Rounds to concede and wish him well..

We have had so much support from all of you across the state. We really believe this is just the beginning. The campaign doesn't end tonight, it begins tomorrow. It's up the Dems that get elected tonight to work with moderate Republicans, to forge a future based on what we CAN do, not what we CAN'T do.

Time to see what happens!

We're all off the Radisson. See you there, and if not, see you right here!

GOTV GOTV GOTV

We're in the thick of it! Looking up numbers calling people, visibility, pick ups, notary publics getting people abstentee voting, we're at it. See you on the other side, all!!!!!!!

Suzan Nolan came by to rally us a bit and share the joy of this election, as we gather together with lots of hope and strength to change Pierre!

Pam Hemmingsen came by too, to strike a pose with supporter and GOTV volunteer Andy Long.

Tom Katus is here, now for the final stretch!! Almost there!

What a great day.

Watch those political signs

Here we go.

Blessed Sacrament's grounds are plastered with political signs (pretty brazen, I'd say, since Open Bible was shut down for not agreeing to take down THEIR signs. We have good folks on the problem, but it would be good to have more solid info on this... so please email me any pictures of today (of sign violations, and hopefuly more happy stuff too) and I'll post 'em right here at http://penndemocrats.blogspot.com

UPDATE 9:00 am:
The signs have been removed as of 9 am. Thanks to all for a "clean" polling place! Word is that this has happened a few other places, thanks to all who have taken the initiative to makes sure everyone can vote undistracted.

Pennington Democratic Victory Party - SEE YOU THERE

The day is here.

Seems to me this is like a huge symphony concert, so many people have prepared, working on their own and together for so long, that it's almost impossible to comprehend all that has been done and the love, care, and passion we have all put toward today. Although those of us that are lucky enough to be able to get off our day jobs and do polls and visibility during the day today will be working hard, but we are well-prepared so in some ways we get to celebrate the fruit of our labors all day.

However, there is fortunately another important celebration this evening, and the honor of your presence is requested, yea, urged! Please plan on joining us tonight at the Radisson for our VICTORY PARTY.
This thing is a great springboard to a bright future for the Pennington Dems, so it's important that you be there!

And besides it will be a blast. Joyce Payton was telling me on the phone last night about the good work she's been doing on this.  This party will be just fantastic--end of an incredible campaign and an event to inspire us to the future. We will be absolutely informed up to the minute as results come in with TVs, internet access (they have WiFi, so yours truly will be blogging away; you can bring a laptop too if you want) and lots to eat (though make sure to save the best stuff for the GOTV volunteers, who will be straggling in, tired but happy)! You may yet be able to get a room at the Dem rate--$63--so you don't need to even consider driving home after such a long day!! Radisson's #: (605) 348-8300

The following people have made major contributions to the victory party--thank you all SO MUCH.
  • Congresswoman Stephanie Herseth
  • Pam Hemmingsen
  • Sharon and Tom Warner

URGENT: Please call Sen. Thune today

This just came across the wire. Elli is urging Thune to stand with Dr. James Dobson and his crew of out-of-state extremist right-wing Christian politicos at Mount Rushmore on Saturday. She also criticized him for being "weak" on the issue (see link below). Please call Thune's office @ 348-7551 and urge him to refuse to respond to this bullying from the right wing. This election, since he is in the middle of his term, he represents all of us, and should act like it and stay above this controversial ballot issue--and let the voters decide this one on its merits.

Also, please urge your moderate Republican friends to consider vote Democratic this year, to send a clear message to the SDGOP that their leadership is leading our state in the wrong direction. It's time to find common ground!

It is crucial that Senator Thune hear from his
constituents, particularly those who feel how
inappropriate it would be for him to stand shoulder to
shoulder with James Dobson and the like at this time.
South Dakota is divided enough right now, and this
would only further our divisions.  Please call and let

takes a minute of your time.
