2. Protect your yard signs
We're bound to see some Halloween mischief, especially this year when passions are running high. Since we've been losing many yard signs as we have in District 32 in broad daylight, we could have a real problem Halloween Night when the witches and goblins may be about. To avoid sign loss, please take your signs inside Tuesday morning Oct 31 and put them out again on Wednesday. This could save us a lot of lost political signs.

REMOVING OR DAMAGING POLITICAL SIGNS IS A CRIME. If you lose signs, please do report it to police, and ask for replacements.
(If you don't know who to contact, please email us -- democrats@pendem.org -- and we'll help.)

3. Take back our State on Election Day
 -
If you haven't already voted, do it now!  It's SO easy to do, and then you can have Election Day to do other things, such as:
  - Help a candidate with their Get Out The Vote effort
  - Be a driver for the GOTV effort
  - Be a runner for any number of candidates/issues
  - Bring food to any number of places to sustain the troops!
To volunteer:
- County-wide: gotv@pendem.org
- District 32: contact Terry Whiting: whitingt@hotmail.com
- Come to the training on Saturday 11/4 (see Calendar, above)
Questions: email ( gotv@pendem.org) or call (721-1636) the PenDems!

4. Executive Board Committeeman position open
The Pennington County Democratic Party will hold their next meeting on Thursday November 16, 6pm. The meeting will include an election to fill an open position for Executive Board Committeeman. If you are interested in nominating yourself or someone else for this position, contact Justin Lena ( kitwellena@rap.midco.net).

PenDem Radio Ad: Please Help!!

We need immediate support for an excellent radio ad.
Listen to the ad here:    http://qurl.com/6lvw6

Share this link with your friends! We want everyone to hear it, as it will help us all the way up  and down the ticket, not to mention the important ballot questions.

Radio is expensive, so we're asking for your help. There are more than 300 people on the PenDemorandum email list, and if 100 of you gave $25 we'd have 100 spots, which is would definitely get the message out there.

Please give if there is any way you can. You can drop a check in person by dropping by the Billion Office, 629 Main St, or click this link to give instantly by PayPal:

(Note: Your contribution is not tax-deductible as a charitable contribution for Federal income tax purposes.)

Pendemorandum: Thursday Night Update

Here more details on the Candidate Night at North Middle School to be held on Thursday at 6:30 pm. This event is being held by the North Rapid Civic Association, and all candidates from Districts 32,33,34 are invited. (This scheduling conflict is why the Thurs night PenDem meeting was cancelled.)

Please, come to the event, and bring questions that point out the reasons why it is in the interest of all South Dakotans to send Democrats to the Legislature on Nov. 7.

Speaking of Nov 7, be sure and plan to come to the Raddisson on Election Night at 7 pm to celebrate!!!

No on C yard signs are here

No on C signs from South Dakotans Against Discrimination are here!! If you can host a sign, call Mike Coats at 343-4872 or 430-5491 or e-mail mmcoats@earthlink.net

Again, please don't hesitate to report sign vandalism to the police. (An RCJ article posted tonight said that the police hadn't heard about sign vandalism besides a few Yes On 6 signs--but I can tell you that in District 32 we have already  had at least 10 signs stolen.)

PenDemorandum: Thursday PenDem Meeting cancelled

PenDemorandum
Some urgent items ....
==============================
  • Thursday's PenDem monthly meeting has been cancelled due to conflicts and the fact there is no pressing business outside of getting ready for the election, and all is in motion. Next business meeting will be November 16.
  • Come to the District 35 candidate night at North Middle School, Thursday night at 6:30 pm.
  • Please attend one of the GOTV training sessions the next two Saturdays. Visit http://pendem.org for dates, times, and places. Questions? email gotv@pendem.org
  • Be sure and vote early so you can be available to help the last few critical days and on Election Day.
  • Political sign vandalism is likely to increase as the election draws nearer. Please notify the police (and campaigns) of sign vandalism incidents, and make it clear to everyone you know that no matter how passionate you are about a campaign and no matter what the other side may do, sign vandalism is wrong, and against the law.
  • There's a lot happening! Please bookmark http://pendem.org in your browser and check the calendar often on the website.

Don't miss Jack's last debate with Mike Rounds. 7PM Central, 6 PM Mountain. Remember, this wasn't supposed to be the last debate. Shortly after getting solidly thumped on Public TV (see video) last Thursday, Rounds backed out of the scheduled November 2 KSFY debate.

Fwd: No on 6 Yard Signs Are Here!!!

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: leah <leah@sdhealthyfamilies.org>
Date: Oct 19, 2006 5:54 PM
Subject: Yard Signs Are Here!!!

Dear Friends and Supporters,

We will be getting the NO on 6 Yard Signs in the Rapid City office on Saturday !  You can stop by the campaign office at anytime (we are open 9-9 daily) to pick up a sign to display in your yard.  We will also be doing a yard sign blitz to get them out into the community on Sunday.  We would love for you to join us.  We will be meeting at our office at 2:00 pm.  Hopefully this will help combat the opposition's signs around the community.

Can't make it on Sunday? We will be doing a visibility on Saturday afternoon.  We will meet at the SDCHF office at 12:00 to make signs and then go hit the streets. This is a fun way to get our message out and we hope that you can join us!!

Once again, thank you for all of your help and support.   Feel free to contact us with any questions at 716-0673, and we hope to see you sometime this weekend.  Together we are going to win this election and make sure that the abortion ban is repealed in South Dakota.

Thanks again for the continued support!

Press conf Thurs 2 pm, WestMed Rehab

Our party Chair, Judy Duhamel, recommends tomorrow's Rapid City press conference to both Democratic candidates and all their supporters. She's so right--this is our issue: fighting for regular people so they will receive what they both need and have been promised through the Medicare program.

More details on the issue to be discussed at the press conference are here: http://qurl.com/fg37t

--

From: Judy Olsen Duhamel, Chair, SD Dem Party

Hi All,

I'm writing to muster interest in a topic many of you  know far far more about than I.

Westmed Rehab Center, 318 Mt. Rushmore Road, 2:00 pm,  Thurs., 19th is the place for the Press Conference regarding the 41% cut in  Medicare reimbursement for assistive technology such as wheel chairs.  Another big issue is  parity prosthesis.

Senator Johnson and Congresswoman Herseth are  supporters of restoring this funding, which was arbitrarily cut by  Republicans.  (I must tell you I have not seen the voting records.)   Senator Thune is a wild card on this one.  Although a Federal issue, it is  our obligation to speak for people in need and raise questions and awareness at  every possible opportunity.

I know many of you are very well-informed--I am not,  but a friend of mine this morning alerted me to the conference and hoped we  would have people there. I will try to stop by and I'd hope our candidates and su supporters  would  as well.  THIS IS A DEMOCRAT ISSUE, SO IT'S IMPORTANT FOR US TO BE VISIBLE AND  VOCAL!

Thanks so very much.  Happy  Day!

Judy

Republican lip-service to Christians exposed on 60 minutes

Yet more evidence that the Republican Party of President Bush has betrayed evangelical Christians by promising them much but delivering little, and even leading them on a path that ignores the central Christian message of service to those in need.

Bi-partisan Meeting: No on C

Amendment C is a dangerous constitutional amendment and another example of how last year's Legislature, dominated by extreme right-wing Republicans, has attempted to distract South Dakotans from their failure to provide solutions by cravenly using divisive social issues that should not be addressed by government. This has been a right-wing Repub tactic distract us from the issues that affect all of us, the issues they have failed to deal with: jobs, healthcare, education. So vote early for Dem candidates -- and then RSVP and come to this event to join with the "good" Repubs that are against C!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Released October 10, 2006

BI-PARTISAN MEETING AGAINST AMENDMENT C TO BE HELD 6-8 P.M MDT THURSDAY IN RAPID CITY

RAPID CITY--A bi-partisan group of South Dakotans will meet at Republican State Senator Stan Adelstein's home Thursday evening to talk about the unintended but harmful consequences of Amendment C on South Dakota families and how it can be defeated.

The event, organized by South Dakotans Against Discrimination, will be held from 6-8 p.m. MDT. Featured guests are former South Dakota resident and Republican activist Jimmy LaSalvia and Gill Action Fund executive director Patrick Guerriero.

The public is invited to attend but should RSVP prior to the event to Jon Hoadley, SDAD campaign manager, at 605.360.7948 or email info@againstdiscrimination.org.

LaSalvia is currently a field consultant for the Log Cabin Republicans organization in Washington, DC . A former South Dakotan, he is a graduate of Douglas High School and Black Hills State University . He was a staffer in former Governor Walter Dale Miller's 1994 campaign. After leaving South Dakota in 1996, he founded the Kentucky Log Cabin Republicans chapter.

"I'm looking forward to being back in my old home state to share my views and make a conservative case against Amendment C," LaSalvia said.

Guerriero was president of the national Log Cabin Republicans group prior to becoming the Gill Action Fund's first executive director. He is also a former mayor, state representative, and candidate for lieutenant governor in Massachusetts.

"Patrick's a great example of how people working in partisan politics can work for bi-partisan solutions and moderate policies," SDAD's Hoadley said. "We can't wait to have him and Jimmy back in South Dakota."

For more information or interviews with LaSalvia or Guerriero, contact Jon Hoadley at 605.360.7948 or jon.hoadley@againstdiscrimination.org.

South Dakotans Against Discrimination is the ballot question committee formed to educate and organize the majority of the voters in South Dakota to vote no on Amendment C, the ban on civil unions, domestic partnerships, "quasi-marital" relationships, and marriage for gays and lesbians. Amending South Dakota's Constitution to discriminate against both straight and gay families is wrong for our state, will have unintended consequences, and highlights the least caring behavior of any community towards it neighbors.

The Common Ground initiative was envisioned as a call to bring real dialogue on important issues to State politics and government. Unfortunately, some Republicans have chosen to literally and figuratively sit in the back of the room and criticize our Party instead of  talking about the issues Common Ground addresses. Common Ground Letter

Rapid City Journal
Letters, 10/7/2006

New dialogue

All 89 of the Democratic legislative candidates joined last week in the direct, hard-hitting and specific Common Ground initiative (http://sdcommonground.org), committing to better wages, fiscal responsibility and a better future for South Dakota.

It seems that Republicans are worried that voters are ready to hear our agenda - to the extent of appearing in the back of the room at the press conference to loudly criticize the initiative and distribute negative campaign literature attacking Common Ground.

The truth is, the Republican majority is not delivering. It's time for a new dialogue that includes new ideas.

We are committed to electing our highly-qualified Democratic candidates to the state Legislature this November. South Dakotans will finally breathe a collective sigh of relief when moderate Republicans, empowered by a new political reality, can feel safe to roll up their sleeves and join moderate Democratic legislators at the table to find solutions together, finally able to ignore the reactionary right-wing of their party - which seems content to sit in the back of the room and criticize.

2. PenDems at HE SAPA WACIPI (PowWow) this weekend
The last PowWow of the year will be down at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center this weekend. The Dem booth will be open from 11am-10pm Fri and Sat, and 11-6pm on Sunday. All are encouraged to help us at the booth, or if you can't just come by and lend your support! Contact your favorite PenDem candidate to offer to help during their booth time; or if you don't have one yet (or can't choose among this stellar group), check with Theresa Spry (sprybunch@aol.com). Our Dem candidates will be honored in the Friday Grand Entry at 7 pm!

3. PenDems, Please Vote Now!
Please vote early to free up your time to help out on Election Day! It only takes a few minutes down at the County Courthouse. For more details, visit: http://www.votepennco.com
By the way, if you can help with Get Out The Vote (GOTV efforts) on Election Day, please contact one of your local candidates, sign up at the Billion Office at 629 Main St, or ca ll (605) 721-1636) or email (democrats@pendem.org). Think about it--a few hours of your help on Nov 7 may decide a race in our favor!
