I am sending this out as a reminder that you are invited to the Blue Summit Legislative Retreat in Sioux Falls, SD on November 19th starting at 10:00am and we will be finishing around 5:00pm.  If you can only make part of this event, that's fine, please still come.

[PenDems (293)] Board of Education opening - applications due Oct 5!

RCAS Board of Education member Doug Kinniburgh has resigned his position to take a job transfer to the DOT office in Pierre at the state capital.  He is the area 7 representative.

The Board of Education position is non-partisan.

The process is pretty straightforward:

They would fill out an application to finish Doug's term, the end of June, 2012, in the Business Office at CSAC.  The candidates will be interviewed by the Board of Education on October 13th at 5.30 pm.  The person chosen to complete the term will be seated at the October 20th BOE meeting.  If they are not sure of their residence status, they may call Kathy in the Business Office at 394-4026. 

The deadline for filling out an application is October 5.  They need to live in Area 7, be 18 years of age and registered to vote in area 7.

Legislative Redistricting Forum

Wednesday, September 21

7pm to 9pm - Classroom Building at SDSM&T 

This forum is intended specifically to determine and hear public input on the districts in and around Rapid City.  We strongly encourage citizens to request that district boundaries are drawn in a way that groups "communities of interest".  For Example: it should be reasonable to request that North Rapid is given its own district and that the other areas of Rapid City with similar demographics also receive consideration for grouping as a district.

The Pennington County Democratic Party is having a Rummage Sale!!

Drop-off donated items on Thursday July 21 at the Labor Hall at 922 E. Saint Patrick Street, so clean out your closets and garages.  Clothes, small furniture, household items, books, etc can all be donated to our sale.  The money will be used by the county party to cover our annual rent and storage expenses.

Sale days are July 22 and 23. The sale will open at 4:30 on Friday and run all day Saturday, so stop by and see what treasures you can find!

Volunteers are welcomed and needed all days. This sale is going to require some good volunteers and help to make it a success.  Please consider donating your time on Thursday, Friday or Saturday to help with set up, and running the sale.  We certainly appreciate it!

Please make plans to attend the SD Legislative Redistricting committee meeting this week.  These hearings will determine the boundaries of the new legislative districts in our state for the 2012 election cycle.  Information about the meeting from the Legislative Research Council is included below.

When:    Wednesday, July 13, 2001;   10:30 AM

Where:  Classroom Building, Room 204;  South Dakota School of Mines Campus

Who:    Chair David Lust (Representative), Vice-chair Larry Rhoden (Senator), Senator Jim Bradford, Representatives Brian Gosch, Kent Juhnke, and Mark Kirkeby.

Scope of Meeting:       Determine if a conurbation area will be established  in and around Rapid City.

Determine the exterior boundaries of any established Rapid City conurbation area.

Governor Daugaard plans to take $16 million a year away from our schools, hospitals and nursing homes, and use that money for taxpayer funded giveaways to large corporations. We can stop him, but we need 16,000 signatures by June 27th to get this bill on the ballot. Saturday, June 18th is our last chance to defend our children, seniors and families in need. We have 15,000 signatures now.

Please, join us on Saturday, June 18 from 10am to Noon.  Meet at the Rapid City Post Office parking lot (500 East Blvd).  Kristin will be there with petitions, clipboards and all the help you need to gather signatures to put HB 1230 on the ballot.

View it in your browser.   Three weeks have passed since many joined the South Dakota Democratic Party to launch the campaign to refer House Bill (HB) 1230, a measure taking over $16 million a year from our schools and nursing homes to create a "large project development fund," to the 2012 general election. Unless defeated at the ballot box, HB 1230 will take money away from funds for education and healthcare at a time when we're struggling to keep teachers in our classrooms and to keep nursing homes from closing because of the governor's budget mistakes. WIth help from folks like you, our efforts have already yeilded great results: 134 have volunteered to gather signatures 28 online petition packets have been requested 16 Community Petition Leaders have been designated 11 favorable articles have appeared across South Dakota in newspapers, on radio, and in the blogosphere. 2 Letters to the Editor have been written 1 Governor has grown increasingly bashful. Every day, dozens of South Dakotans are knocking on doors and gathering signatures at post offices, courthouses, and local events across the state. They are taking the first step to stop this bill in its tracks. And you can too! Join your friends and neighbors to gather signatures in your community In order to successfully refer HB 1230, we need to secure 25,000 valid signatures by June 27th, 2011 at 5pm. Democrats, Republicans, and Independents are signing the petition to stop the Governor's effort to pit our children's education against economic development. They know that if we sacrifice education for economic development, we are actually at risk of losing both. Every signature counts – whether you get it gathering signatures at the post office or by asking your friends over coffee. The Pennington County Democrats will host their regular monthly meeting on Thursday, April 12 beginning at 7pm at the IBEW Labor Hall located at 922 1/2 E. Saint Patrick Street in Rapid City.  

Officer elections will be held at this meeting to fill the positions of:

• Chair - also serves on State Dem Central Committee
• Vice-Chair
• Secretary
• Treasurer
• Native American Representative
• Young Democrats Representative
• Committee woman - representative to the State Central Committee
• Committee man - representative to the State Central Committee
• Precinct Committee men and women for all precincts in Pennington County

ANYONE interested in holding one of these positions is strongly encouraged to attend the meeting and ask for a nomination.

According to the SDDP Constitution, any registered Democrat can vote for the Precinct men and women.  Only sitting Precinct men and women can vote for the County Party officers.

The final Crackerbarrel of the 2011 Session will be held on Saturday, March 5 

at the Classroom Building on the School of Mines campus starting at 9am.

The Pennington County Democrats will gather at 8am at Black Hills Bagels 

on Mt. Rushmore Rd for breakfast and discussion before the crackerbarrel.
